KU Flute Studio
The Flute Studio at KU is comprised of enthusiastic young flutists pursuing degrees in music education, music performance, and music therapy. The students are guided through a program that is tailored to meet their individual goals and needs, while focusing on developing a strong fundamental understanding of music and flute playing.
Degrees Offered:
-Undergraduate: Bachelor of Arts, Music Performance, Music Education, Music Therapy.
-Graduate: Master of Music in Performance, Music Education, Music Therapy.
Graduate Certificate in Music Performance.
Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance.
Prospective students are encouraged to contact Dr. Velasco at dvelasco@ku.edu for a trial lesson and to find out details about the audition process.
Audition Requirements:
- Undergraduate:
1. One Baroque sonata (Bach, Handel, Quantz, Telemann, or Vivaldi)
2. One piece from the French Conservatory repertoire (repertoire from the Flute Music By French Composers or a piece of equivalent difficulty)
3. Sight reading
4. Scales: Full-range chromatic scale; major and minor scales of two or more octaves.
- Graduate:
1. Prepare a 45-minute program of pieces from the standard flute repertoire representing different styles. Choose from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, French, and Contemporary literature.
2. Prepare two contrasting orchestral excerpts.
